Many years ago when a boy would court a girl
It wasnt just 'do ya wanna date'? or out the door he'd be hurled
There was a gentle art of showing that his thoughts were keen
And to the parents house would come, with intentions, not just dreams
One way to show his love was real, to test his intended's zeal
To show the parents that he had the stuff that made it real
Was in an act of proving that his hunting skills were honed
And also that he'd think of her and spoils be brought to home
And so the lad would go to forest, take himself a straw
A long and skinny piece of grass, to present at parents door
And then a hunting he would go, to find the blessed sweets
The wild untamed small berries, to present to his love as treats
And as he wandered through the glades, he sang a little song
And hunted these small berries through the morn and all day long
Each tiny berry that he found, he threaded on the straw
A bead of love for his intended, then he'd hunt for more
And as his bounty grew, and twas enough to round her wrist
He knew that he just had to hunt for more, less love be missed
And so each corner of the forest, swept by his young eyes
As hunters instincts keened in him, to win his hoped for prize
And sing his song he did for her, and as his berries grew
His love he worked so hard for in these berries, now he knew
As day past high and still that straw would fit only her throat
He keened his senses one more time, so love would not be broke
And as he hunted, teasingly these berries smelled so sweet
And as he'd hunted all day long, had nothing himself to eat
At this point he could make a choice, and eat his just desserts
Or test if his own love was true, hunt on, although it hurt
If he could find the berries that would fill that blessed straw
And with each bead of sweetness added, love his bride still more
He would, when had his berry straw, present himself to door
Of parents and hold out his off'ring, ask for nothing more
And if his love accepted it, and wore the berry straw
And ate each tasty morsel from it, wanting ever more
Each bead that held his love for her, in gentle hands was held
His offer was accepted and, in her, his love now dwelled
It wasnt just 'do ya wanna date'? or out the door he'd be hurled
There was a gentle art of showing that his thoughts were keen
And to the parents house would come, with intentions, not just dreams
One way to show his love was real, to test his intended's zeal
